John B. Mears

John B. Mears is currently the Director of Bands at Central Magnet School in Murfreesboro, TN. He has spent 16 years teaching instrumental music from grades 5-12, with his current position including both middle school and high school levels. After graduating from McGavock High School, he attended Middle Tennessee State University where he received his Bachelor’s in Music Education. John received his Master’s in Music Education from Boston University in 2012. Under his direction, the Central Magnet Band has grown to 200+ members comprising 5 Instrumental Music Classes, Jazz Band, Music Theory/History, and Pep/Rock Band.

 

John currently composes/arranges for several local marching band programs as well as an ongoing catalog of young band curriculum resources that focus on new approaches to teaching middle school band. He has also composed original scores for several films and documentaries, through independent filmmaking communities and the film department at Vanderbilt University and Watkins College of Art, Design & Film.

 

John is a member of the Tennessee Bandmasters Association, American School Band Directors Association, and serves as Performance Ensemble Chair for the Tennessee Music Education Association All-State Convention.
